Protect your skin this summer

May is skin cancer awareness month, and as a skin clinic, it is our duty to educate our customers on the importance of wearing an SPF.

Around 15,400 people are diagnosed with melanoma (the most dangerous type of skin cancer) each year in the UK. The incidence of malignant melanoma in Britain has risen faster than any other common cancer. A scary thought! Some of the risk factors include:

Experience of blistering sunburn during childhood/young adulthood doubles the chance of developing melanoma in later life.

Use of sunbeds: the risk is highest for patients who have used a sunbed aged under 35 but use at any age will increase the risk because of the increased exposure to UV light. Did you know Australia have banned the use of sunbeds for this very reason, and this saves thousands of lives every year!

Significant sun exposure in childhood is the single most important lifestyle risk factor, which means most people reading this have been exposed to this risk because of the lack of education on being sun safe when we were younger, and the lack of affordability, because of the high costs of an SPF.

This is why we LOVE ALTRUIST SPF

Developed by a dermatologist from Kent & Canterbury Hospital, Dr Andrew Birnie set out with a vision to reduce the incidence of skin cancer by enabling MORE people to use MORE sunscreen. Together with the help of the best scientists in Europe, they created an exceptionally high quality sunscreen at the lowest possible price.

The whole team at SKINLAB use Altruist products. Once you have tried them, you will never go back to using SPF's from high-street stores. The products absorb like a really good body moisturiser, without that horrible sticky feel you get with other well-known brands.

We stock:

Face Fluid SPF 30, Sunscreen SPF 30, Sunscreen SPF 50, Family Sunspray SPF 50 & Anti-redness & pigmentation SPF 50

Prices range from £6.30 - £15.00

With sun damage and ageing come pigmentation and sunspots

If you have pigmentation and/or sun spots, hopefully you are using the correct products to treat effectively. One product that is renowned for helping lift pigmentation is retinol. Retinol speeds up how quickly we make new skin cells and promotes the production of collagen. Because of this, retinol helps exfoliate the skin, which improves uneven skin tone and pigmentation.

Let’s talk about one of our favourite retinols at the moment - Tretinoin

Tretinoin like retinol is a derivative of vitamin A. Tretinoin is considered "better" than retinol because it is a much more potent retinoid, which is why it requires a prescription. Besides, there are many clinical studies supporting the efficacy of Tretinoin in the treatment of dark spots and pigmentation, as well as rough skin texture, acne and wrinkles.

Sarah Diamond is an Independent Nurse Prescriber. She can prescribe Tretinoin for the above indications. This does require a quick 15 minute face-to-face consultation first. If you would like to upgrade your retinol to Tretinoin, book a Tretinoin consultation.

Prices range from £100 - £120 depending on the strength prescribed.
