Semi-Permanent Makeup

Discover the Art of Semi-Permanent Makeup at SKINLAB

Semi-permanent makeup, also known as micropigmentation or cosmetic tattooing, is a cosmetic procedure that involves the application of pigments into the upper layers of the skin to enhance or mimic the appearance of makeup. It is designed to create long-lasting, natural-looking enhancements for features like eyebrows, eyeliner & lips.

How does it work?

  • The process typically begins with a consultation with a trained and certified semi-permanent makeup artist. During this consultation, you discuss your goals, preferences, and any specific concerns you have. The artist will assess your skin type, tone, and overall facial features to create a customised plan.

  • Together with the artist, you select the appropriate pigment colours. These pigments are specially formulated for use on the face and are available in a wide range of shades to match your natural colouring or achieve your desired makeup look.

  • The artist uses a specialized handheld tool or machine with ultra-fine needles to deposit the pigments into the skin. The process is similar to tattooing but is less invasive and doesn't penetrate as deeply into the skin.

  • For procedures like eyebrow enhancement, lip blush, or eyeliner, the artist meticulously designs the shape and style of the makeup to ensure it complements your facial features and aligns with your preferences. They often use measurements and guidelines to create symmetry and precision.

  • In many cases, a topical numbing cream or gel is applied to the treatment area before the procedure to minimise discomfort. While the process isn't usually painful, some clients may experience mild discomfort or a slight scratching sensation.

  • Multiple layers of pigment may be applied to achieve the desired depth and colour intensity. The artist carefully builds up the colour to ensure it looks natural and blends seamlessly with your skin.

  • After the procedure, the treated area may appear slightly darker than the desired result. This is normal and is due to the initial superficial scabbing that occurs. Over the next few days or weeks, the colour will fade slightly as the skin heals.

  • A follow-up appointment is typically scheduled several weeks after the initial procedure. During this session, the artist evaluates the healed results and makes any necessary adjustments to achieve the desired colour and shape.

  • Semi-permanent makeup is not permanent and will naturally fade over time. The longevity varies depending on factors like skin type, sun exposure, and individual metabolism. Clients often return for touch-up sessions every 1-2 years to maintain the desired look.

Preparation

  • 1. Avoid Sun Exposure: Refrain from excessive sun exposure and tanning beds for at least four weeks prior to your appointment. Sunburned or tanned skin can affect the outcome of the procedure.

    2. Avoid Blood Thinners: If possible, avoid medications and supplements that can thin your blood, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain vitamins, for at least one week before the treatment. Consult your healthcare provider before discontinuing any medications.

    3. No Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours before your appointment, as it can lead to increased bleeding and swelling during the procedure.

  • 1. Medical History: Inform your micropigmentation artist of any medical conditions, allergies, or medications you are currently taking. This information is crucial for your safety.

    2. Skin Conditions: If you have any existing skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, or cold sores, let your artist know. They can provide guidance on whether the procedure is suitable for you.

    3. Previous Procedures: Inform your artist if you have previously had any semi-permanent makeup procedures or cosmetic tattoos. This helps them assess your skin and plan the treatment accordingly.

  • 1. Come Prepared: Arrive for your appointment with clean skin free of makeup, lotions, or creams in the treatment area. Your artist may need to remove any residual products.

    2. Eat a Meal: Have a light meal before your appointment to prevent lightheadedness or discomfort during the procedure.

    3. Comfortable Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing, especially if your treatment involves a long session. You may need to lie still for an extended period.

    4. Bring References: If you have specific preferences for your semi-permanent makeup, bring reference images or examples to show your artist. This ensures they understand your desired outcome.

    5. Plan Transportation: If you are receiving a numbing cream before the procedure, plan for transportation home, as you may be temporarily impaired due to the numbing effect.

    6. Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to ask any last-minute questions or seek clarification on the procedure process before it begins.

Aftercare

  • 1. Keep the Area Clean: Gently clean the treated area using a mild, non-alcoholic, fragrance-free cleanser and water. Use a clean cotton pad or gauze to avoid any irritation.

    2. Avoid Touching: Refrain from touching the treated area with your fingers, as this could introduce bacteria and lead to infection.

    3. Apply Healing Ointment: Depending on the artist's recommendation, apply a thin layer of the provided healing ointment to the treated area. This helps keep the skin moisturized and promotes healing.

    4. Avoid Moisture & Excessive Heat: For the first few days, avoid excessive exposure to water, including long showers, swimming, or soaking in hot tubs. Moisture can disrupt the healing process.

  • 1. Gentle Cleansing: Continue to gently cleanse the area as recommended by your artist to prevent infection and keep the area clean.

    2. Avoid Makeup: Refrain from applying regular makeup or skincare products to the treated area until it's fully healed, which may take about 5-7 days.

    3. Avoid Sun Exposure: Protect the treated area from direct sunlight and tanning beds. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher when exposed to the sun.

    4. No Scratching or Peeling: Avoid picking, scratching, or peeling the scabs or dry skin that may form during the healing process. Let it naturally slough off.

  • 1. Avoid Exfoliants: Avoid using exfoliating products, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), or retinoids on the treated area for at least two weeks or as recommended by your artist.

    2. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and promote overall healing.

    3. Avoid Saunas and Steam: Stay away from saunas, steam rooms, and activities that may cause excessive sweating for at least two weeks post-treatment.

  • 1. Redness and Swelling: Some redness and swelling are normal immediately after the procedure but should subside within a few days.

    2. Itching: Mild itching may occur during the healing process. Refrain from scratching to avoid infection.

    3. Colour Change: The colour of the pigment may appear darker initially and then lighten as the skin heals. This is normal.

    4. Scabbing: Scabs or dry skin may form. Allow them to naturally fall off; do not pick at them.

  • 1. Maintain Hydration: Keep your skin well-hydrated by using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer as recommended by your artist.

    2. Sun Protection: Continue to protect the treated area from UV rays by applying sunscreen daily, even after it has healed.

    3. Consult Your Artist: If you experience any unusual or persistent side effects, or if you have concerns about the healing process, contact your micropigmentation artist for guidance and support.
